Yes, that's right. My name is Lucia, and today is the Feast of St. Lucy. Not that they ate her, like you do at most feasts, but that today Catholics around the world remember her. I hope that one day they remember me. Of course, then it would be the Feast of St. Lucia, unless I change my name later in life.
Sure, Lucy and Lucia are different, and you may wonder why I celebrate today. Well, they both come from the same word "light." According to Mom, Lucia is the Spanish / Portuguese translation of Lucy. Speaking of light, did you know that I was born on another feast day? The Feast of the Transfiguration. I guess you could say that this feast has something to do with meals, since Christ is transubstantiated every day at Mass. (Yes, Mom and Dad have taught me big words in my short life.)
Well, I gotta go—all this talk about food is making me hungry. I'll leave with you this prayer for the intercession of St. Lucy.
Saint Lucy, you did not hide your light under a basket, but let it shine for the whole world, for all the centuries to see. We may not suffer torture in our lives the way you did, but we are still called to let the light of our Christianity illumine our daily lives. Please help us to have the courage to bring our Christianity into our work, our recreation, our relationships, our conversation—every corner of our day. Amen.
